Feel in Control of Your Gambling
Taking Control:
Gambling in the UK is widespread, from the National Lottery to online sports betting and pubs with slot machines. While for many it’s a harmless recreational activity, for others, it can spiral into a serious problem. If you, or someone you know, is struggling with problem gambling, know that you’re not alone, and there’s help available.
Recognising the signs:
• Increased time and money spent gambling: Neglecting responsibilities, work, or relationships in favour of gambling is a red flag.
• Chasing losses: Trying to “win back” money lost leads to further losses and deeper trouble.
• Lying and hiding gambling: Feeling ashamed or secretive about your gambling habits is a sign of an issue.
• Financial difficulties: Borrowing money, neglecting bills, or experiencing financial stress due to gambling are serious consequences.
• Mood changes: Irritability, anxiety, depression, or suicidal thoughts linked to gambling are cause for concern.
Taking action:
• Self-exclusion: Ban yourself from betting platforms and land-based gambling venues through GamStop, GamCare, or Be Gamble Aware.
• Seek professional help: GamCare and GambleAware offer free, confidential support, including therapy and counselling. Your GP can also be a starting point.
• Support groups: Connecting with others who understand your struggle can be invaluable. GamCare and Gamblers Anonymous offer group support meetings.
• Financial advice: If you’re in debt, contact Citizens Advice or StepChange for guidance on managing your finances.
